The Individualization of Responsibility

Too often our society equates “environmentalism” with personal consumerism. So, in order to be “good,” we have to live a zero-waste lifestyle, stop using Amazon Prime and go on a vegan diet. This overemphasis on individual action shames people for their everyday activities, which is caused by the fossil fuel-dependent system they were born into. Meanwhile the environmental crimes from just a handful of corporations are often ignored.

Simply put: the individualisation of environmental responsibility is a barrier to real action against the climate crisis.
